I will be honest there was not much that was exciting me about moving into a new home. I do not do well with change especially when it was all within the chaos of having a newborn baby and a toddler to take care of. However, one thing that kept me excited about moving was decorating both Mason's and Lily's room. One thing I really wanted to do after Lily's first birthday was to update her nursery into a big girl room! Moving was the perfect opportunity to take my girls room to a whole new level. I went in two totally different directions when it came to Mason and Lily's room so I am going to dedicate a blog post to each of them. It was so much fun searching for the perfect items, deciding on paint colours and the best part was doing it all with Lily. While I knew I did not want her room to be themed around her favourite TV show PAW PATROL, I wanted her to be involved in picking out some of the stuff for her room. The reason I did not want to design her room around Paw Patrol was because I know how quickly kids change their minds about what their favourite TV shows and characters are. I wanted to design a room that can grow with her. My hope was that by involving her in the process and creating a room that she loved that it would help encourage her to want to sleep in her own room, but I will let you know how that is going in another blog ;)
And with that in mind, I started searching Pinterest. That is the worst app ever for your bank account! The ideas are endless. How was I too choose just one? Thankfully Lily's furniture was not an issue. Her crib transitioned into a double bed and she had the matching dresser so I did not have to worry about purchasing new furniture for her room. I am honestly obsessed with her bed set (linked below)! It is so beautiful and I am so happy that it will grow with her for a long time. Another item we already had for her room was her ceiling light. When we decided to move my major condition was that I take Lily's light from her bedroom with us! I fell in love with this light before Lily was even born and knew it was perfect for my baby girls room. Lily has always loved it so there was no way I was leaving it behind. So with that checked off the list, I started looking in the stores at what was available to give me inspiration. I also started thinking about what are some of Lily's favourite things and two things that immediately popped into my mind Horses and the colour Blue! So as I started searching the stores I found a lot of things that were unicorn themed and I knew that was the direction we should go. Yes I know Unicorns aren't horses however, its similar and to be honest there isn't much cute stuff out there horse themed. The unicorn stuff is SOOOOO CUTE!
After I had a theme in mind, next step was paint colour. I did not want to start buying any decor until I had the paint colours picked out. I wanted to do something fun for her which immediately drew my attention to the idea of an accent wall. So, we decided to go bold and paint her room 3 different colours; blue, pink and purple. When we went to the paint store Lily came with us and even helped pick out paint colours it was so much fun and surprisingly pretty easy to pick out the three colours! I am so lucky to have painters in my family and my two cousins came and painted both Lily and Masons room. Once we had the paint colours picked out I was able to hit the stores and start purchasing some decor.
One thing I learned and the biggest piece of advice I can give you is when shopping at places like Marshalls, Winners and Homesense if you see an item you think you might want GET IT! Worst case scenario you return it if it doesn't work in the room. There were a few times when I was shopping I would see items at these stores I liked but was not 100% sure how I would incorporate it into her room so I didn't buy them. Then I would go back to get them and they were gone, and I could not find them anywhere else. It was so disappointing. Looking back I would have purchased the items and just took them back to the store if they did not work. I purchased a lot of Lily's decor from Bouclair. At first it was not on the top of my list of stores to shop at for decor but when my mom suggested I looked there I was so happy because they had the most perfect items to fit into her room! I will link everything below! And, with it being right before Christmas they had awesome sales on so I got a lot of the items for a really great price.
Another must for Lily's room was making sure that her closet was built and organized properly. We had a fresh coat of paint put on it before we moved anything in which freshened it up. And I had my father in law add another shelf and clothing bar in the closet. I like that Lily can reach the bottom bar and pick out her own clothes as she is MS.INDEPENDENT now! The extra shelf adds the extra little bit of storage that I needed.
Seeing Lily's face after her room was done was so exciting! She loves taking people up to see her room when they visit the house. She has started playing in her room with her vanity set and loves snuggling up under the blankets! She is quite particular about how her pillows are arranged on her bed too. I love that she is making it her own space and showing off her personality in her bedroom. One thing I don't love is her passion for messing up her bed right after I make it but seeing her smile and hearing her giggle as she jumps around on her bed makes it all worth it!
How do your husbands react to your decorating obsessions? Chris was not overly fond with me spending money on decor for the kiddos rooms, which is why I of course hid it away in one of their closets until I needed him to hang it up on the walls HAHA! Where are some of your favourite places to find decor for your home?
